JEWELRY CARE TIPS

How to Keep Your Pieces Looking Stunning

To maintain the beauty and longevity of your luxury jewelry from Tessories, it's important to take proper care of your pieces. Follow these essential jewelry care tips to keep your gold, silver, and sterling silver jewelry shining for years to come.

How to Clean Gold Vermeil Jewelry

What is Gold Vermeil?

Thick gold plating (minimum 2.5 microns) over nickel-free sterling silver. More hypoallergenic than standard gold plating. Avoid exposure to perfume, chlorine, and water to extend its life.

Cleaning Steps

1. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap or baby shampoo with lukewarm water.

2. Soak the jewelry for a few minutes.

3. Gently scrub with a soft-bristled toothbrush or lint-free cloth. Do not scrub too hard.

4. Rinse thoroughly under lukewarm water over a sink strainer.

5. Pat dry with a soft, clean cloth (avoid paper towels — they can be abrasive).

6. Polish gently with a jewelry polishing cloth designed for gold vermeil.

7. Store in a cool, dry place in a jewelry box or pouch, away from moisture and air.

How to Clean Gold Filled Jewelry

What is Gold Filled?

Gold filled has an actual layer of gold pressure bonded to another metal. It contains 5% gold, is tarnish resistant, durable, safe for metal allergies, and lasts 10–30 years. Much more valuable than gold plating.

Cleaning Steps

1. Prepare a mild cleaning solution: a few drops of mild dish soap or baby shampoo with warm water.

2. Soak the jewelry for a few minutes.

3. Gently scrub with a soft-bristled toothbrush or cotton swab. Avoid abrasive materials.

4. Rinse thoroughly under lukewarm water (use a strainer).

5. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Polish with a jewelry polishing cloth for extra shine.

6. Store in a cool, dry place in a jewelry box or pouch.

How to Clean Gold Jewelry

Cleaning Steps

1. Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add mild dish soap.

2. Soak gold rings/necklaces for 20-30 minutes.

3. Use a soft small toothbrush to brush into crevices.

4. Rinse with warm water.

5. Dry with a clean towel.

How to Clean Silver Jewelry

Soap & Water

Warm water and mild, ammonia- and phosphate-free dishwashing soap. Use as first line of defense and before any other method.

Olive Oil & Lemon Juice

Mix 1/2 cup lemon juice with 1 tsp olive oil. Dip a microfiber cloth, wring out, polish the silver, rinse, and dry.

Home Remedy (Aluminum Foil Method)

Place aluminum foil in a pan, add 2-3 inches of water, 1 tsp baking soda & 1 tsp salt, bring to a boil. Add silver pieces, boil 1-2 minutes. Remove, rinse, dry and buff with a soft polishing cloth. Do NOT use this method on silver with stones.

Important Care Notes

Never use chemicals on rhodium plated items. Never use toothpaste or a hard toothbrush.

Understanding Silver — Rhodium Plating & Oxidized Silver

Rhodium Plating

Coating silver with a fine layer of rhodium increases durability and brilliance — your silver will look like white gold. Rhodium plating prevents tarnishing and scratching.

Oxidized Silver

Some silversmiths intentionally darken parts of jewelry to make details stand out. This detailing can be lost with excessive cleaning. Identify oxidized pieces and clean them separately.

Important Care Notes

Never use any chemicals on rhodium plated items. Never use toothpaste and never brush with a hard toothbrush.

Storage & Travel

Storage

Store sterling silver and precious jewelry in a dry place — a jewelry box or silver pouch. For added protection, use air-tight, anti-tarnish bags to block air exposure and preserve shine.

Travel

Use a special jewelry case to keep pieces safe. Bring a polishing cloth to touch up jewelry on the go.

Everyday Wear & Activities

Showering

While it's not recommended to shower with your jewelry on, an occasional shower won't cause significant damage. Dry your jewelry thoroughly afterward to avoid moisture buildup, which can tarnish some materials over time.

Swimming

Remove your gold and silver jewelry before swimming. Chlorine in pools can weaken ring prongs and damage metal. If you forget, rinse and clean immediately.

Hot Tubs

Higher chlorine concentrations and heat accelerate tarnishing and damage. Avoid wearing jewelry in hot tubs.

Hot Springs & Chemicals

Hot Springs: Sulfur in natural hot springs can discolor and oxidize silver jewelry. Avoid wearing silver in hot springs unless you want a dark oxidized look.

Chemicals (Lotions, Perfumes & Sprays): Apply these products first, let them dry completely, then put on your jewelry to prevent tarnishing and discoloration.
